Oltre al Colosseo c’è di più!

🇮🇹 Roma.

🇬🇧 Rome. The Eternal City. We can’t estimate how long it itakes to explore it in full. Every detail reminds old times, from the Ancient Rome ‘till “La Dolce vita”, everything is precious! Here we want to give you a suggestion to pass one day in Rome without chaos, without standing in long line for museums and to sleep away from the noise of city center.

🇬🇧 Villas deep in the green.

This is the theme of our break in Rome. We could make a very long list of “museum-houses” that you have to see but, if you never have enough time like us, we selected two of these.

Villa Doria Pamphilj.

“Villa Doria Pamphilj”. 184 hectares of green, gardens, fountains, palms, pinewoods and to cap it all the majestic villa that dominates the labyrinth and the orange trees. Originally it was a simple agricultural plot, then in the half of the seventeenth century, the aristocrat Panfilo Pamphilj became the owner and hired the best sculptors, painters and botanists to create the magnificent place that we can still admire today. From 1957 it is property of Italian State and Romans come in this enormous park to do jogging, nordic walking and every kind of body exercises under a warm sun and in the shade of scented pines. While you walk in the park, peeking beyond walls, you can see an unusual sight of St. Peter’s Cupola.

🇮🇹 Villa Torlonia.

🇬🇧 “Villa Torlonia”. Crossing the river Tevere and going straight on toward Nomentan quarter you arrive in this second villa. The arisocratic Pamhilj was one of the first owners, but ‘till the beginning of 1800 it was only an agricultural field. Then the banker Giovanni Raimondo Torlonia started the project to build the noble villa. The long works continued with Alessandro Torlonia, his son. He ordered to erect two obelisks in memory of his parents.

🇬🇧 The Succesion of different owners carried to the transformation of buildings and monument inside the park. “Casina delle Civette” (House of Owls) is a typical example. Before it was called “Capanna Svizzera” because it was similar to a swiss chalet. Then it was transformed into a little medieval village and a lot of strained glass windows with too many owls were added on. So this is the reason why it’s called like this. After the Second World War, like the all villa,  it was uncared-fora and suffered also a fire. Finally in 1978 the municipality of Rome acquired Villa Torlonia and from 1992 to 1997 the house was completely restore and converted in museum.

🇬🇧 If you are fearless you can book a guided tour to see undergrounds of the Villa, where a Jewish catacomb was discovered and where Mussolini and Prince Torlonia built an underground bunker to take shelter from bombings.

🇬🇧 Finally a well-deserved rest at the Black Hotel http://www.blackhotel.it/ : a design hotel situated in Aurelia zone and faraway from the frenzy city-center. Balck is undisputed ruler and bright colors of furnishing are surely evident. Corridors are decorated with constellations like the main door that reminds an egyptian gate. Unlike the rest of the hotel, the rooms are all white and bright. Two details to emphasize: the lowered ceiling and the wardrobe with chains.
